The image above is a reconstruction of a 305 million-year-old insect, which is believed to be an early predecessor of the cockroach. The reconstruction was made by scientists at the University of Manchester using a CT scanner. The fossil was placed in the scanner, which took more than 3,000 x-rays from different angles. From the resulting slices, the scientists were able to recreate the insect in 3D.
